8 9 Abstract 10 11 The control of the right application of medical protocols is a key issue in hospital environments. 12 For the automated monitoring of medical protocols, we need a domain-independent language for 13 their representation and a fully, or semi, autonomous system that understands the protocols and 14 supervises their application. In this paper we describe a specification language and a multi-agent 15 system architecture for monitoring medical protocols. We model medical services in hospital 16 environments as specialized domain agents and interpret a medical protocol as a negotiation process 17 between agents. A medical service can be involved in multiple medical protocols, and so specialized 18 domain agents are independent of negotiation processes and autonomous system agents perform 19 monitoring tasks. We present the detailed architecture of the system agents and of an important 20 domain agent, the database broker agent, that is responsible of obtaining relevant information about 21 the clinical history of patients. We also describe how we tackle the problems of privacy, integrity and 22 authentication during the process of exchanging information between agents. 23 # 2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. 24 25

Erratum to "Data mining a diabetic data warehouse" [Artif. Intell. Med. 2002;26: 37-54]
Diabetes is a major health problem in the United States. There is a long history of diabetic registries and databases with systematically collected patient information. We examine one such diabetic data warehouse, showing a method of applying data mining techniques, and some of the data issues, analysis problems, and results. The diabetic data warehouse is from a large integrated health care sy...
متن کاملFinding related functional neuroimaging volumes
We describe a content-based image retrieval technique for finding related functional neuroimaging experiments by voxelization of sets of stereotactic coordinates in Talairach space, comparing the volumes and reporting related volumes in a sorted list. Voxelization is accomplished by convolving each coordinate with a Gaussian kernel. The scheme allows us to compare experiments represented as eit...
متن کاملActive subgroup mining: a case study in coronary heart disease risk group detection
This paper presents an approach to active mining of patient records aimed at discovering patient groups at high risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). The approach proposes active expert involvement in the following steps of the knowledge discovery process: data gathering, cleaning and transformation, subgroup discovery, statistical characterization of induced subgroups, their interpretation, a...
متن کاملIntegrating model-based decision support in a multi-modal reasoning system for managing type 1 diabetic patients
We present a multi-modal reasoning (MMR) methodology that integrates case-based reasoning (CBR), rule-based reasoning (RBR) and model-based reasoning (MBR), meant to provide physicians with a reliable decision support tool in the context of type 1 diabetes mellitus management. In particular, we have implemented a decision support system that is able to jointly exploit a probabilistic model of t...
متن کاملAnalyzing tumor gene expression profiles
A brief introduction to high throughput technologies for measuring and analyzing gene expression is given. Various supervised and unsupervised data mining methods for analyzing the produced high-dimensional data are discussed. The main emphasis is on supervised machine learning methods for classification and prediction of tumor gene expression profiles. Furthermore, methods to rank the genes ac...
